What recruiters wish you knew about standing out in 2025

Posted on 28 August 2025

Job searching in 2025 can feel like shouting into the void, particularly in Australia, where workforce participation is at a record 67.3%, meaning more people than ever are looking for work. But here's the good news: roles are available. It's how you position yourself that counts. Every day, our consultants see the difference between candidates who blend in and those who make a lasting impression.

In this blog, we explore what our consultants really wish job seekers knew about how to stand out in the job market in this hyper-competitive era.

Employers notice more than your skills

Technical ability will always matter, but employers consistently tell us they’re looking for something more. Cultural fit, growth potential and attitude can often tip the balance in favour of one candidate over another. PwC Australia reports that organisations are now prioritising “human skills” like emotional intelligence, critical thinking, and collaboration over purely technical qualifications.

As our Principal Consultant Debbie Ewington notes, it isn’t just about “ticking skills and experience boxes.” Employers want to know how you'll add value, how well you communicate, and your readiness to grow.

Tip: Even if you’re still honing technical skills, showcase instances where you’ve adapted or contributed positively to team dynamics. Employers value those just as much.

First impressions start earlier than you think

By the time you're in the interview room, hiring managers have often formed opinions: your LinkedIn profile, email tone, and even your application visuals all play a role now.

One of our consultants puts the key ingredients of a good impression simply: “Customised application letter, easy‑to‑read CV, interview presentation, and communication.” In short, preparation and a polished presence speak volumes.

Tip: Make LinkedIn part of your weekly routine. Update your profile, add thoughtful content or connections. It shows recruiters you’re active and engaged.

Your story is more powerful than your CV

What stays with hiring panels isn't the bullet points; it’s your personal narrative. Candidates who articulate why a role matters to them and how their experiences align with company goals are memorable.

One example Debbie shared was of a candidate who had clearly researched the company, linked past experiences to future goals, and asked meaningful questions, which left an impact well beyond their resume.

Tip: Skip the buzzwords. Talk about why you're passionate about the role and explain how your journey makes you a fitting match.

Respect goes a long way

Professionalism isn’t only about qualifications. Simple actions, such as arriving on time, preparing well, and following up, are often the qualities employers remember most.

Debbie points out how effective a personalised thank-you note can be after an interview. It doesn’t need to be long, but reflecting on the conversation and reinforcing your enthusiasm shows professionalism and motivation. Another of our consultants added that customising an application letter and CV to match the role is another small but powerful way to show respect for the process.

These gestures might seem minor, but they demonstrate care, attention and the kind of attitude every employer values.

Tip: Send a thank-you email within 24 hours. Reference a specific moment from the interview to show you were fully present.

Standing out in today’s crowded job market isn’t about gimmicks or grandstanding. It’s about being reliable, authentic, and prepared. Candidates who consistently live these values from first contact to final interview are the ones employers remember.
